I think it's safe to say that just about all of us in the writer's craft class loved the movie It's Kind of a Funny Story. The storyline was definitely relateable. Sure, not all of us are clinically depressed, nor have we ever probably been admitted into a psychiatric ward at the hospital, but we have all felt depressed or overwhelmed at some point of another. The character Craig is completely overwhelmed in his life with the pressure to succeed, as well as to impress his father and the girl that he has a crush on.
As well, the characters in the movie are all likeable. Look at Craig for example, he's roughly our age, and is facing the same challenges that we are all facing currently. Maintaining high grades, hoping the get accepted into a good school, pressure from parents and teachers, and peer-pressure. Yet, he faces these obstacles the best way he knows how - by seeking help.
The characters of Noelle and Bobby are also very likeable in my opinion because they help Craig heal during his week long stay at the hospital. Bobby would help Craig with his girl problems and helped get him introduced to life at the hospital, while Noelle offered him comfort, and made him feel accepted in his new environment. In general, the movie was awesome. The writing, the humour, the art... just about everything was completely suited toward the nature of the film.
On a slightly different note, I'm proud to say that I have finally managed to get the novel It's Kind of a Funny Story from our school library. There's only one copy of the book, and apparently it's also in high demand. Anyway, my goal is to read it before next week and then I'll compare it to the movie.
